Stories of Another Tomorrow – Performance Colours and Materials Summer 22

We all know 2020 has been a difficult year for creatives, especially as we can’t physically travel as we would normally, finding inspiration, new ideas and sources for the upcoming season.

Nora Küehner inspired us at Ssachs with her Summer 22 Performance Colors Trends ” Stories of Another Tomorrow” for Performance Days Functional Fabric Fair.

The color stories that we selected for the season reflect the turmoil and complex entanglements of a world in transition. The palettes mingle dazzling saturated tones and comforting pastels. Conveying an overall feel of warmth and optimism with lustrous brightness and a dynamic flow.

NORA KÜEHNER

Thinking of how we could help kick off Summer 22 via connecting our community of brands, creatives and suppliers alike, we decided to take Nora’s colour themes for Summer 22 (with her permission of course!) dive into our favourite fabrics, and expand those “stories”.

The result is 87 curated unique raw material items from 23 vendors across the globe, matched into Nora’s six themes for the season.

A wide variety of fabric types were selected (52 knits, 25 wovens and 9 trims) with the aim of being a resource for multiple summer categories across men’s , women’s , unisex, from high performance close to body sports wear to outerwear, to accessories to athleisure to work from home.

Weights range from a 30 gsm water repellant crinkle organza to a 430 gsm 2 x 1 snuggle viscose – synthetic blend rib. Articles were selected for having unique features such as innovative technology – outstanding handfeel, performance and comfort, and sustianability.

Change

Change is all about bridging the gaps as globalisation is challenged. Everything is fragmented, as our work and private lives have been shattered. It’s trying to avoid textile waste via seeing it as a precious resource – a new kind of beauty, a new circle of life, as exhibited in the work of RÆBURN.

Facts & Fantasy

The second story Facts and Fantasy is all about digitalization, AI and fake news, collides with the human aspect. Human’s have analogue bodies, so we should work with digital tools and not let them over rule us. Life is more important than binary codes, it can cross borders. With luminous contrasts and mixed art collages, our second story is the dynamic interplay of human crafts and digital technology.

Pure Earth

Lockdowns during spring gave us a new appreciation of nature, and how the earth supports our well being. Non perfect fabrics built for longevity support the explosion in interest and uptake of outdoor sports, such as cycling, camping and hiking.

Void

Nora’s fourth theme explores the notion of isolation and empty spaces, not as a negative experience, but as room for new thoughts. There is a warm golden glow which comes from such thoughts. Oscillating between near and far, this is the story of discovery, of child-like sketches. Graphics are therefore approached in a playful way. There is a need to be careful, but as designers we exercise our power by doing our best to move forward, despite the shadows.

Take off

Looking in a fresh and optimistic way towards the future, ideas Take Off energetically and experimentally. We are not complaining, or throwing away the old, but accepting the past and working with what we already have. It’s seeing the treasure that is already here.

Simplification

The final story explores that as humans we need to consider we can’t work as machines. We need to go at walking speed, so as not to miss the simple things. What are the indispensable ‘must-haves’? A minimal atmosphere breeds a sense of calm and clarity.
