Thom Browne’s Fall/Winter 2024 showcase at New York Fashion Week was a testament to his ability to merge fashion with literature, delivering a show that was both dreamy and poetic. Drawing inspiration from Edgar Allan Poe’s renowned poem “The Raven,” Browne crafted an awe-inspiring spectacle that left a lasting impact on the runway.
The collection unfolded as a visual ode to Poe’s exploration of love and transformation through the personification of the raven. Models adorned with dried branches and clad in colossal black feathered garments towered over the venue, evoking an eerie ambiance akin to humanoid deadwood, dramatizing the poem’s surreal scenes. Browne’s ingenious incorporation of dried branches and towering coats reaching over 9 meters high created a visually stunning impact, captivating the audience.
Browne’s attention to detail was evident as he seamlessly integrated deconstructive techniques with exquisite craftsmanship. Classic tailored garments and military woolen coats were adorned with hand-woven tweed and gold-threaded “ravens,” showcasing his mastery in intricate detailing. The signature black tie formalwear was reimagined through deconstructed designs, featuring snug silhouettes sculpted with layered cuts and adorned with satin ribbons, tweed, and plaid patchwork.
As the collection reached its climax, gold-threaded embroidered capes adorned with pressed roses and black ripple raven motifs made a grand entrance, exuding extraordinary opulence. Hand-woven gold-threaded cardigans paired with waistcoats and white silk courtly gowns added a touch of regal elegance to the finale.
