IF ONLY ALL BRANDS WERE AS ECO-CONSCIOUS AS STELLA MCCARTNEY

Stella McCartney’s SS21 collection arrives with a new A-Z sustainability manifesto that aims to refine the increasingly obfuscated buzzwords surrounding so-called “sustainable” fashion.

McCartney explains that while in lockdown she “found [herself] asking deep questions of myself and of the brand, why do I do what I do? and what do you come to us for and what is our meaning and what is our purpose?”

The manifesto hones in on words such as “Accountability,” “Desire,” “Vegan,” and “Zero Waste,” with each term being implemented into future collections. “In short, this manifesto reflects who we are, and who we hope to be.”

To illustrate the A-Z,  McCartney has partnered with 26 different artists to interpret each letter. The pool of artists will include established names such as Jeff Koons, Olafur Eliasson, and William Eggleston but will also feature “promising youthful talents given a global platform alongside their more established peers.”

As “sustainability” continues to become a buzzword rendered partially meaningless due to corporate greenwashing, McCartney’s efforts to remain accountable sync up with the brand’s approaching 20th anniversary and align with the brand’s history of environmentally-aware production methods.

ACTIVISM WAS THE REAL WINNER OF THIS YEAR’S FASHION AWARDS

3 MONTHS AGO IN STYLEWORDS BY MAX GROBE

The annual Fashion Awards (TFA) went fully digital for 2020 with a newly formatted program to reflect the turbulent year. Classic awards such as “brand of the year” and “best accessories designer” were replaced with a short film highlighting 20 individuals across areas of Community, Creativity, People, and the Environment.

The film also brings in a fresh selection of fashion’s thought leaders and new creatives such as photographer Myles Loftin to share their thoughts on the changes seen across the industry this year.

Under the “People” category, the BFA honored the Emergency Designer Network, a group created by Bethany Williams, Cozette McCreary, Holly Fulton, and Phoebe English to create 50,000 surgical gowns and 10,000 sets of scrubs for health workers in the UK, demonstrating the designers’ incredible adaptability to an unprecedented global health crisis.

Samuel Ross, founder of A-COLD-WALL* was also selected as an honouree in the People category for his rapid response to Black Lives Matter movement, which saw him develop the Black Lives Matter Financial Aid Scheme and subsequently pledge £10,000 to the organizations and people on the frontline supporting the movement.

Stella McCartney was recognized for being a trailblazer in the sustainability sector, in particular for being pioneering many of the processes that are now percolating the world of fashion, from fabric innovation to encouraging circularity with local communities.

Elsewhere, Edward Enninful was commended for his contributions to diversity through his editorship at British Vogue, meanwhile, Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons’ co-creative directed SS21 collection for Prada was noted as the most anticipated debut of the year, and Riccardo Tisci and Jonathan Anderson were lauded for their creative alternatives to standard fashion presentations.

The Highsnobiety Fall Fit Toolkit is your manual for dressing well this season, from wellies to weather-ready running gear.

The season of de-sandling is upon us. It’s a unique time to re-up, re-consider, and re-think our footwear rotation. And while the old harvest season standbys that have served us for many moons are still tried and true — from rugged trail runners to forever-trending Nike SBs — fall is a time of change.

Enter the Wellington boot.

Popularized by the rubber-shoe brand Hunter, Wellingtons are a footwear classic beloved by cranberry farmers and moms on holiday alike. Plus, with Supreme putting the Barbour jacket back on the map, and half of the creative industry working remotely from AirBnbs in the boondocks, it just feels right to rock kicks that look like they come with a pack of hunting dogs.
